Aussie sax player becomes hero, saves drowning US boy

“Sax practice and keeping the beach safe are not mutually exclusive”, Australian sax player Roy Molloy quipped on social media after he saved a young boy from drowning on a New York beach.

Molloy plays with Australian singer-songwriter Alex Cameron, and currently on a three-year world tour behind Cameron’s Jumping The Shark album on Secret Canadian Records.

At Rockaway Beach in Queens, he heard the parents of a young boy screaming for help after he was swept away.

The heavyset boy was the third to be rescued in wild conditions on a beach that had no lifesaving guards.

“I jumped in off the rocks there - all cut up and ripped my shorts,” Molloy told a CBS New York news team.

“He was floundering, drowning. I don’t think he’d have been able to get himself in. No way.”

A surfer helped pull the boy in, he added.

Cameron posted, “Jumped in off the rocks and got to him before he drowned. Didn’t think twice.

“The guy is a full time operator.”

 Russell Crowe was among those who tweeted their congrats for Molloy’s actions.

Cameron and Molloy’s earlier European dates were with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Mac Demarco, the latter playing to sell-out crowds.
