Live entertainment to make gradual comeback as Victoria eases out of lockdown, but not all shows can go ahead

Victoria's two-week snap lockdown has come to an end overnight, with new restrictions allowing for some sectors of the arts and entertainment industry to make a gradual return to trading.

As of today, Victorian pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes will be able to reopen for seated service only, with a maximum capacity of 100 people and a strict density limit of one person per four square metres applying in all settings.

Fixed seated and standing indoor music venues can also return to hosting live shows, provided they stick to the same 100 person capacity and four square metre density quotient. Venues smaller than 100 square metres are now able to hold up to 25 people before the density quotient comes into effect.

Outdoor non-seated and fixed seated entertainment is also permitted to return, with a maximum of 300 people per space and the four sqm density quotient being applied to non-seated areas.

Group booking numbers are limited to 10 people, while a venue-appointed COVID Marshall must ensure all attendees check-in prior to entry.

The strict 100 patron limit means that large-scale shows such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Frozen will not be able to reopen until August 8, while dancefloors will remain closed until further restrictions are eased within coming weeks.

Heralding the arrival of the new restrictions, premier Daniel Andrews praised the efforts of Victorians and pleaded for them to stay cautious as the Delta strain continues to wreak havoc around the country.

"There are still thousands of Victorians in quarantine and people will need to remain vigilant to stay on top of this highly infectious Delta variant," Andrews said.

"That means COVIDSafe behaviours like checking in everywhere, every time, wearing a mask and getting vaccinated when you’re eligible will remain key as we cautiously open up again."
