the weeknd breaks record for most streams in a day

Following his Starboy pop-up store in Melbourne last weekend, The Weeknd has broken the record for the most streams in a single day on Spotify.

Spotify told TMN it won’t be releasing the actual figure of the new global benchmark nor the name of the artist who previously held the record.

Spotify’s Global Head of Creator Services, Troy Carter said in a statement: "We’re proud to have partnered with The Weeknd, his management and Republic Records on a phenomenal album. We look forward to breaking even more records together in the near future."

Republic Records Chairman & Co-Founder, Monte Lipman said, "Spotify’s continued support of The Weeknd has now reached historic proportions and also reinforces the tremendous growth of global streaming."

26-year-old Abel Makkonen Tesfaye released third LP Starboy just five days ago. TMN predicts the album will likely enter the ARIA chart at #1. According to a prediction by Hits Daily Double in the US, it’ll also debut at #1 in the US following forecasted sales of 350-400K in equivalent albums (including streaming) in its first week.

The title track, which held the #2 position on the ARIA chart for six weeks, is #1 on the Spotify Australian, US and Global charts. It’s raking in 198,502 daily streams in Australia and 4,958,271 globally.

Starboy the album follows last year’s Beauty Behind the Madness, which debuted at #1 in Australia and in the US, where it entered the Billboard chart following 412,000 equivalent album units sold.
