Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett, 5SOS up for NME Awards

ARIA winners Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett and 5 Seconds of Summer are included in the shortlist for next year’s NME Awards in the UK.

For the second time, Sydney’s 5 Seconds of Summer have been nominated in the Worst band category. This year the band took out the award after imploring their more than 8 million Twitter fans to vote for them. Next year they’re up against U2, tour mates One Direction, UK girl group Little Mix, Nickelback and English post-punk duo Sleaford Mods.

5SOS took out the inaugural public-voted ARIA for Best Australian Live Act last month and have taken home multiple British trophies in the past, including a 4Music Video Honours Award for Breakthrough Artist, a Brit Award for International Group and Best International Newcomer for Rock Sound magazine’s Readers’ Poll.

Psych-rock quintet Tame Impala are up for Best Album (for Currents), Best International Band and Best Music Video (for The Less I Know The Better). The nominations follow the band’s ARIA Awards sweep last month where they picked up five, including two early wins for frontman Kevin parker (Engineer of the Year and Producer of the Year). The band also picked up four WAMI Awards this year in their hometown of Perth.

The NME Awards nod isn’t Tame Impala’s first international accolade however, last year the band were nominated for a Grammy in the Best Alternative Music Album category for their ARIA #4 LP Lonerism. In the US the album charted at #34; meanwhile the quintet’s lmost recent LP Currents hit #4 on the Billboard 200, and #1 on the ARIA chart. The 2016 Grammy nominations will be announced tonight, (December 7 in the US).

Courtney Barnett is continuing her banner 2015 with a nomination in NME’s Best International Solo Artist category. The Melbourne musician/songwriter/artist is up against Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Grimes and Kanye West. Kanye is voted in both the Villain of the Year and Hero of the Year categories.

Barnett had the most nominations at this year’s ARIA Awards with eight, and took home four. The 28-year-old also received widespread critical acclaim in the US this year and even joined the likes of Beck, Laura Marling, First Aid Kit and Tom Jones for a collaboration with Jack White. The team-up is part of a series of singles recorded at Third Man Studios in Nashville called Blue Series.

Winners of the fan-voted awards will be announced on February 17, 2016 at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.
