The US singer-songwriter, whose track All About That Bass held the #1 spot on the ARIA Singles chart for four weeks, has become the first song to hit the UK Top 40 without a single sale.

The track hit #33 on the UK Singles chart this week, solely on the back of digital streaming.

Streaming services like Spotify and Deezer now count towards official chart rankings; the reform was brought in by the Official Charts Company in July and sees audio streams of music calculated alongside single purchases and downloads.

All About That Bass receives an official release in the UK next week.

Since debuting at #36 in August, the now 3x Platinum track has held onto the Top 5 in recent weeks, currently sitting at #2. It’s also certified 2x Platinum in the US, Platinum in New Zealand and Gold in Denmark.

Trainor originally wrote the song with Kevin Kadish, who has written for Miley Cyrus, Meat Loaf and Michelle Branch. The track was pitched to other acts but when Epic Records Chairman L.A Reid heard her singing the track, he signed her to the label and encouraged her to release it herself.
