Drake's 'Scorpion' sets massive new Apple Music streaming record

As of Friday, Drake SZN officially began with the release of his hotly anticipated fifth studio album Scorpion. The 25-track album features previously released smash hits 'Nice For What' and 'God's Plan', as well as features from Jay-Z and vocal samples from the late Michael Jackson.

With Scorpion, Drake has made history yet again, setting the record for most ever one-day streams for an album on Apple Music. The bulked-up album managed logged more than 170 million streams on its release day Friday, June 29.

This marks Drake doubling his previously held record for one-day album streams on the platform, which he broke with 2017's mixtape More Life. 

Spotify users are currently criticising the platform for its excessive marketing of the album, with Drake apparently featuring in almost all of the platform's in-house curated playlists.

As Variety noted, the move is most likely part of a plan to get Drake breaking as many records as possible across all platforms.

“In an unexpected move, given Drake’s long history with Apple Music, they’ve also gone big with Spotify, teaming up with the service for its first-ever global dedicated artist takeover, called “ScorpionSZN,” whereby Drake takes over multiple playlists on the same day,” Variety writes.
