Adelaide EDM artist M4SONIC has been picked up by Sony and Ultra Music after a video he uploaded to YouTube went viral.

As reported by Billboard, the multi-album deal with the major and its in-house EDM sublabel was sparked eighteen months ago when the 22-year-old architecture student, also known as Nick Boundy, uploaded a two-minute, 53-second video of himself playing an 80-button Ableton Launchpad controller.

Boundy had previously spent ten years learning classical piano before setting his sights on the square Launchpad, “I wanted to be the first ambidextrous Launchpad performer,” he told Gizmodo. The video, titled Weapon (Live Launchpad Mashup), unveiled Boundy’s assault rifle-inspired moniker and has since garnered almost 15.3 million hits.

When Boundy performed on last year’s Stereosonic festival tour he caught the eye of Jon Hanlon, Sony’s Director of Electronic Music. Hanlon phoned Patrick Moxey, Ultra Music head/President of Electronic Music for Sony in New York and the pair agreed to sign Boundy.

Boundy has performed just 12 live shows to date.
