Adelaide says goodbye to two music spaces

After 40 years of showcasing live music and offering cheap drinks and food for University of Adelaide students, it seems as though the UniBar is closing.

The university outsourced the venue in 2007, and it has changed hands a number of times since.

Its current owner is run by the Adelaide University Staff Club but its contract will expire in December.

The university is opening a new bar at ground level of Union House in February 2019, in time for Adelaide Fringe. It will showcase live music.

The club posted on Facebook that the university has decided to close Unibar and patrons had two weeks to say goodbye.

"Its carpet won't have years of spilled beer layered on top of Bundy and cola premix deep within its fibres," the post said.

"The stage won't wear the footprints of decades worth of local, interstate and international talent, the pool tables might not make it down the stairs, and your dog tag memberships are likely to get you no more than a smile of recognition of things past.”

However, a university spokesperson has said that a definite decision has not been made on UniBar, and it was quite possible that next year there could be two music-showcasing bars.

In the meantime, CBD basement club Biggies at Bertram on Grenfell St has closed after two years.

Its owners put it up for sale after deciding to move interstate but a buyer could not be found.
