The AFL has selected Casey Barnes' 'Light It Up' as the promo song for the 2022 season.

AFL and its broadcast partner Channel 7 said there's no better way to build excitement for the year.

Publicity for the sync said the song had already received airplay across a wide range of commercial and country networks, so this deal was "the icing on the cake".

Barnes said: "Anyone that knows me is aware of how much I love my footy. I grew up playing the game so to get this bit of news last week was pretty special."

The AFL season kicks off this Wednesday, so the promos will be running across the Seven Network's properties this week.

In recent years, the AFL stopped courting international acts to perform at its Grand Final in light of COVID-19 restrictions and closed borders.

In 2020, the event shifted from Melbourne to Brisbane, and had an all-Australian music line-up featuring DMA's, Sheppard, Cub Sport, Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale, Electric Fields, Thelma Plum, Busby Marou, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and Mike Brady.
