WAM reveals free songwriting workshops for South West artists

West Australian Music (WAM) is presenting a series of free songwriting workshops as part of WAM’s Song of the Year program.

The initiative is in partnership with Healthway which is  promoting the Act-Belong-Commit message,

The first workshops in the series will kick off in Bunbury this summer as part of the Across The Road Summer Music Festivals happening on Saturday, November 24, Saturday, January 19 and Saturday, February 9.

The workshops present an opportunity for aspiring artists to explore the creative process, connect with others, and learn about the craft of songwriting from established WA artists.

Held near the deadline for the WAM’s Song of the Year competition, the sessions allow participants to finetune their songs under the guidance of skilled songwriters before submitting them in the competition.

Leading the first songwriting workshop is Perth artist Riley Pearce, who has been recognised for his songwriting craft multiple times over his young career in WAM’s Song of the Year awards.

These workshops provide a genuine synergy with the Act-Belong-Commit message.

They provide an opportunity for people to improve and maintain positive mental health through the arts and in particular being creative.

The Act-Belong-Commit message encourages us to all to Act - do something, Belong - do something with someone, and Commit - do something meaningful.

“I’m so pleased to be working with Healthway to promote the Act-Belong-Commit message as part of WAM’s new songwriting workshops,” said workshop coordinator Em Burrows.

“Songwriting and playing music has long proved to be an amazing creative outlet and effective way of staying happy, healthy and connected to your community, so it’s great to be able to inject this new aspect into the workshop program!”

Participating local artists also have the opportunity to join the Across The Road Summer Festival’s lineup, with two performance slots up for grabs at the January and February festivals for workshop attendees.
