revenue up but tidal doubles losses

TIDAL has followed Spotify’s move last month by introducing a block icon that cuts out specific artists and songs.

Users can use the feature on its algorithmically curated products, personalized My Mix (which launched last December) and Artist and Track Radio.

They can either block specific songs or an artist’s entire catalogue.

It will remain permanent until the user unblocks the setting when they change their mind.

The self-censor feature comes at a time when more streaming services are under pressure to ban controversial artists like R. Kelly after campaigns to mute their music from all media.

Spotify’s “hateful conduct” policy from May 2018 was well-intentioned but pushed the service into a minefield of what defines “hateful conduct” and how to be consistent when taking action.

Now the decision is put in the hands of the music fans.
