The European EDM festival Summer Sound will be coming to Australian shores in the coming years, with promoters hoping to launch the event in early 2022.

The announcement follows an agreement between festival management and Adelaide promoter Gareth Lott, known for his work with the capital city's Thebarton Theatre.

Summer Sound lineups have hosted big-name acts including Avicii, Armin van Buuren, Axwell, Dash Berlin and Eric Prydz. Organisers took a few years off between 2014 and 2019 to develop smaller events and club night brands. These other event brands could also be making their way to Australia, in addition to the festival.

"We're excited about the potential of bringing Summer Sound Festival to Australia – wide open spaces and the Aussie summer sounds very attractive right now," Summer Sound spokesperson Alex Kunnari said in a statement.

"Plenty of international EDM talent would love to head down to Australia next season!"

Lott said the team will be looking at options in Adelaide and up the east coast.

"EDM festivals took a bit of a hit five years ago because of skyrocketing talent fees, but we believe we have a formula that will make Summer Sound Festival a success," Lott said.

"It's only early days but we know we'll be outdoors with multiple stages, and we'll have some massive EDM acts on the bill – but it’s not just the line-up that will make people want to come back. This is going to be a lot of fun!"
