SoundCloud has made it simple for DJs to clear the rights to remixes and samples uploaded onto the platform.

This is through a deal struck with San Francisco-based rights clearance startup Dubset.

Artists upload songs and add all original attributions to Dubset’s MixBANK porta.

Then its MixSCAN tech scans the tracks for copyrighted material to appropriately collect and distribute royalties.

The partnership kicks off this year with an invite-only beta program for individual remixes.

The two camps companies will work together to extend the program to include full DJ sets “over time.”

Dubset has in recent years struck similar clearance/royalty payment partnerships with major and independent labels, digital rights groups and streaming services (as Sony Music, Merlin and Tidal) and claims new royalties for over 35 million pieces of original music.

SoundCloud has in the past come under criticism for not adequately compensating them financially.

“SoundCloud is where content creators live,” says Dubset CEO Stephen White.

“It is the most important platform on the planet for creators and the ultimate partner for Dubset.

“Mixes and remixes not only establish incremental new revenue for artists and composers, they have proven over and over to be powerful music discovery growth tools, consistently driving growth in plays of the original track as well.”

In early October, the new SoundCloud Premier promised to help all creators get paid directly.

Previously, it was exclusive to artists who own the rights to the material they upload.
