Russell Morris is the latest ambassador for Record Store Day on Saturday, April 13.

He joins Kate Ceberano, Hockey Dad and Dave Faulkner of the Hoodoo Gurus.

The appointment is apt given indie record stores played a significant role in the veteran singer-songwriter’s renaissance.

While virtually every record company turned down Sharkmouth – the first of his Ghosts and Legend’s trilogy in 2012 – it was recognised by indie retail and music media for the great piece of work it was.

They gave it strong support, via in-store play, and helped break it into the Top 10 of the ARIA chart, won him an ARIA and saw it certified platinum.

It paved the way for the continual success of the following two in the trilogy.

Indie stores are again considered a key to breaking his latest album Black and Blue Heart.

For its 12th year in Australia, Record Store Day will have over 180 indie stores celebrating nationally with live music, DJs spinning vinyl, treasure hunts, parties, barbecues, coffee carts, face painting, one-off releases and of course vinyl (and cassette) crate digging.

The idea is to reiterate the major role indie stores play in the discovery of old and new music.

Pro-Ject Audio Systems returns for a fifth year as official turntable partner.
