Cast your mind back to the mid-'00s for a second. If there's one thing that you'll undoubtedly remember (apart from the inexplicable popularity of Crazy Frog), it's the Plain White T's' biggest hit, 'Hey There Delilah'.

An inoffensive folk-pop gem that was a staple of TV soundtracks and high school mixtapes, it's gone on to become the group's biggest legacy, topping charts around the world and propelling the group to stardom.

Now, for some reason, the track is about to be turned into a television series.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the tune is set to become a scripted romantic dramedy series that uses the song's content as its basic plot.

While the original tune was actually written about a fictitious long-distance relationship US athlete Delilah DiCrescenzo (who, incidentally, was in her own relationship at the time it was dedicated to her), the new series is reportedly set to expand on this concept, and explore how the song changed the lives of its namesake and composers.

"It’s been more than a decade since 'Hey There Delilah' was released, and people always ask me about it. A whole lot of people really connected with that song, and I’m very proud of that," explained frontman Tom Higgenson.

"I’m so excited to have an opportunity to give a new generation the chance to form their own connection with the song, and fall in love with its story through this new project.”

While Higgenson will serve as a producer on the new series, the idea was dreamed up alongside writer Jeremy Desmon (Pump Up The Volume) and Michael Barra of Lively McCabe.

"'Hey There Delilah' is a perfect example of an iconic story song that has introduced characters and a premise to a massive multigenerational audience, and is begging to be expanded into a full-length story for contemporary television audiences," explained Michael Barra.

While there's no word yet as to whether the show will be picked up by any of the major studios, it just goes to show that if you want to make it into the world of television, all you have to do is write a hit love song first.
