Meryl Streep is playing Joni Mitchell.

As per Rolling Stone, record executive Clive Davis confirmed the casting of the acting legend in the Mitchell biopic at his pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles this weekend (January 31st). During the annual event held at the Beverly Hilton in LA, Davis broke the news while introducing Mitchell.

Rumours about Streep's casting in the film, which is being helmed by Cameron Crowe, first emerged in the middle of 2024.

Streep is set to play the older version of Mitchell, while Anya Taylor-Joy has long been rumoured to play the younger version of the folk music legend. Taylor-Joy's casting, however, hasn't been confirmed.

Many online observers suggested Amanda Seyfried as an excellent casting choice for a younger version of Mitchell. In a viral video that circulated on the internet, Seyfried impressed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon with a Mitchell cover played on the dulcimer.

Director Crowe's relationship with his biopic's subject stretches all the way back to 1979, when he interviewed the singer-songwriter for Rolling Stone. He's been developing the Mitchell biopic for the past half-decade, as revealed in an interview on The Late Show last year.

“We’ve been working on it for about four years. We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff. It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out,” Crowe said on the show.

“She’s kept all of her costumes, all of her clothes, all of her instruments. She’s even still the landlady of her famous house in Laurel Canyon. So this is a really personal, wonderful look at her life and music.”

This won't be Crowe's first time bringing the story of a music legend to the silver screen. He helmed a documentary about David Crosby, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and was nominated for Best Music Film at the Grammy Awards the following year.
