ARIA Award-winning artist and beloved philanthropist Josh Pyke has joined the PPCA (Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Limited) Board.
Joining fellow Artist Representative Lindy Morrison, Pyke has been elected to the Board after successfully contesting the bi-annual election in which all eligible registered PPCA Artists are able to nominate and vote for their preferred Artist Representative.
Pyke now enters a one-year term as Artist Representative on the Board where he will collaboratively execute and approve the happenings of PPCA.
Pyke replaces Megan Washington, who was elected in April last year; TMN understands Washington’s schedule didn’t permit her to be available for all PPCA Board commitments.
Speaking to TMN, Pyke said he aims to use his place help emerging artists.
“My main passions are trying to help emerging artists in a climate where it’s tougher than ever to forge a sustainable career,” he said. “Copyright infringement and generally helping people understand the varying negative impacts of said infringement is something I’m focused on.”
Pyke also voiced his concern over Australia’s radio quota laws. According to the Code of Practice to the Australian Music Performance Committee (AMPCOM), commercial stations must play no less than 25% of popular music (e.g., Mainstream Rock and Contemporary Hits) from Australian artists. The code also states stations must play no less than 20% of Mainstream Adult Contemporary and Country music from Australian artists.

“Looking into raising the quota for new Australian music played on commercial radio is a pretty big one too,” says Pyke.
In an interview with TMN published yesterday, music writer Ritchie Yorke said Australia’s local content law is flawed.
“I think personally that they gave the licenses to the wrong people in Australia,” he said. “Too many people have licenses that they’re not suitably paying back the country and the culture for the benefits that they get out of having those licenses.”
Pyke also told TMN he plans to delve into the hotly contested royalty rates surrounding music streaming.
“Something I’m interested in learning more about and digging deeper into is how streaming royalties are passed on to artists,” Pyke said. “And whether as artists we need to be more unified in addressing issues such as these.”
In 2014 PPCA, which represents Australian recording artists when their music is used in public, distributed almost $33 million to its registered artists and record labels.
George Ash, PPCA Board Chairman welcomed Pyke to the Board: “Josh Pyke brings to the table a wealth of knowledge and experience within the Australian music industry and it is extremely exciting to now have Lindy Morrison and Josh Pyke, two of the country’s most well-respected and hardest-working artists, on the PPCA Board as Artist Representatives,” he said.
PPCA and ARIA CEO Dan Rosen added: “PPCA has a long-standing relationship with Josh Pyke that has flourished over the past few years. PPCA share the same commitment as Josh to safeguarding the rights of thousands of Australian recording artists and labels, ensuring that they receive a fair return for their music,” said. “I am so pleased that Josh is now joining the PPCA board.”
Josh Pyke kicks off a national tour on May 26 at the Darwin Entertainment Centre. The tour in support of fifth LP, the ARIA #2-charting But For All These Shrinking Hearts, sees Pyke visit some of Australia’s most remote stages on the extensive 32-date tour. Tickets are on sale now.
