Jay-Z, Eminem suing Weinstein Company for unpaid work

Rapper multi-millionaires Jay-Z and Eminem are apparently suing the film making Weinstein Company.

In separate court filings, Jay-Z claimed he is owed $480,000 for two projects on which he is named executive producer.

They are Time: The Kalief Browder Story (about the African American teenager jailed for three years without being convicted of a crime) and the forthcoming Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story (an African American teen fatally shot by a neighbourhood watch volunteer at a gated community where the boy was visiting with his father).

The Weinstein Company disputes it owes money to him for the Browder project.

Eminem is suing for $352,000 for three songs he wrote for Southpaw, the boxing film starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

The Detroit native says only $48,000 has been paid for the use of ‘Phenomenal’, ‘Phenomenal 2’ and ‘Kings Never Die’.

The once high flying Weinstein Company filed for bankruptcy in March, following its collapse after the series of sexual assault allegations made against its founder Harvey Weinstein.

The claims by the rappers came to light because their court actions prevents the company from being sold.

Eminem additionally stakes the claim to ownership of his three Southpaw songs, which protects them from being sold on as part of any asset sale in the wake of a bankruptcy.

In this case assets are being sold to private equity firm Lantern Capital.

Also in the queue throwing lawsuits against Weinstein are Quentin Tarantino who is demanding $4 million (they worked together on Reservoir Dogs), Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Daniel Radcliffe, Ryan Coogler, David Bowie and Robert De Niro.

Even Barack Obama’s daughter Malia, who interned with the company in 2017, is named as being owed money by the Weinstein Company’s bankruptcy filing.
