The world is dominated by a handful of corporations who have bought out the rights and ownership of other major brands.

It is very common for one big company such as Amazon to have several other large companies under its control. In fact, there are only about a dozen companies that own all of the other ones - it’s true!

While YouTube was created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005, Google fast recognised the potential of the website and bought it in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion. The search giant also owns GPS navigation software Waze, mobile and web application development platform Firebase, and artificial intelligence company DeepMind, among others.

Elsewhere, Hotels.com, which has 85 websites in 34 languages and 325,000 hotels, is owned and operated by US travel company Expedia. And the Elon Musk-founded PayPal was purchased by eBay for US$1.5 billion in October 2002 – only four years after PayPal launched.

Here’s a look some companies you may not realise are owned by other ones
