Green Music’s Plastic Free July returns: “We won’t play 'til the plastic goes away”

47 artists are ditching disposables and setting an example for others. “Let's keep it up and make Australian live music 100% plastic water bottle free!”

Green Music Australia brings back its Plastic Free July recruitment drive for the successful #BYOBottle campaign, creating a plastic waste-free music scene.

Jack Johnson, The Teskey Brothers, Liz Stringer and Brad Butcher lead the second year.

47 musicians and bands are set to declare over this month that they are permanently ditching disposables and protecting the environment from plastic pollution.

The Teskey Brothers said: “We won’t play 'til the plastic goes away.

“If we all live by this, venues and festivals will catch on pretty soon. Who knows how far it can go from there?”

Reveals Liz Stringer, “I don't go anywhere without my water bottle and I'm so happy to see so many venues and festivals getting rid of the plastic.

“Let's keep it up and make Australian live music 100% plastic water bottle free!”

Brad Butcher, winner of this year’s best new gong at the Tamworth music awards and a winner at the Queensland Music Awards for best country song, stated, “Re-usable drink containers make for a healthier future for our planet.

“I’m proud to support the #BYOBottle campaign.”

Jack Johnson is the campaign’s first international ambassador.

Last year’s Plastic Free July, featured 40 artists including Midnight Oil, Killing Heidi, Bernard Fanning, Ecca Vandal and Montaigne.

According to GMA’s executive director Tim Hollo, the musicians “had a massive impact".

“Not only did these artists directly reduce plastic pollution through their own behaviour, but their leadership was vital in encouraging big festivals to make the shift to reusables.”

Hollo added, “Plastic pollution is the most visible environmental impact of the music scene, and it’s inspiring to see how Australia’s musicians and the music scene are embracing clean, green alternatives.

“With this fantastic cultural leadership, together we can make a real change, showing that throw-away culture is not cool.”

Ambassadors will be uploaded daily throughout July via Facebook and Instagram
