GLAAD Media Awards nominate Troye Sivan, drop Bohemian Rhapsody following disturbing allegations against its director

Perth singer-songwriter Troye Sivan, now based in Los Angeles, was among those nominated for the GLAAD Media Awards.

They are to be held in Los Angeles on March 28 and in New York on May 4.

Sivan is one of ten nominees the category of outstanding music artist.

The other nine are Christine and the Queens, Brockhampton, Brandi Carlile, Hayley Kiyoko, Janelle Monáe, Kim Petras, Shea Diamond, Sophie and Years & Years.

“The images and stories recognized by the GLAAD Media Awards over the past 30 years raised the bar for LGBTQ inclusion in the media industry and changed the hearts and minds of countless audience members around the world,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said.

“This year’s nominees are changing the game by showcasing diverse races, genders, religions, ages, geographies, and genres in ways that challenge misconceptions and inspire LGBTQ acceptance.”

Among those nominated in various categories were RuPaul’s Drag Race, Love & Hip-Hop, American Idol, Billboard, Variety, Pose, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Star, GQ and Entertainment Weekly.

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was removed from the films category a day after The Atlantic published a year-long investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against its early director Brian Singer, including claims that the director had sex with underage boys.

GLAAD found that Singer’s response to the accusations as “homophobia” was “to deflect from sexual assault allegations and GLAAD urges the media and the industry at large to not gloss over the fact that survivors of sexual assault should be put first”.

It is expected the accusations against Singer will also affect the picture’s chances at the Oscars, for which it has been nominated five times, including for best picture.
