The announcement this week of the finalists for the $100,000 Unisounds competition marked a first in the college competition’s 29 year history.

Instead of four finalists, judges made it five, “due to the tight final count.”

The five are Mr Sauce (University of Newcastle), Nelipot (University of Newcastle), Miccy (Griffith University), The Pits (University of Newcastle) and Evanda (Curtin University Perth).

The five join two publicly voted Wild Cards - Ashley Iona (University of Sydney) from the live category, and electronic artist Danny Donahue (La Trobe University) – for the final event on September 19 at the Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney.

The finalists announcement was presented by the 2017 winners Jones The Cat as a live stream from stage at the last of their month-long Sydney residency.

Jones The Cat are in the process of setting up their global release through Dine Alone Records, as part of the prize.

On September 19, each of the seven finalists will be flown to Sydney to participate in an intensive mentoring experience with an industry panel throughout the afternoon.
