FBi co-founder launches label, Lazy Thinking

FBi Co-founder and President Cassandra Wilkinson has today launched her co-founded label, Lazy Thinking Records.

The Sydney-based label takes small cues from overseas indie labels like Mute, Warp and Nonesuch but hopes to nurture local talent with broader appeal. The label’s official tagline is: ‘the future sounds of Sydney’

Wilkinson launched the label with husband and former Australian politician Paul McLeay, musician and writer Jim Flanagan, Catch Communications founder and #sausagequeen Chrissy Flanagan.

Speaking to TMN, Wilkinson said that while she’s "excited by the resilient curiosity" of Mute, Warp and Nonesuch, she’s more focused on the current sounds being made by local artists and the opportunity to grow that talent.

"A big part of my motivation is that over 20 years with FBi, I’ve seen a lot of talent picked up and nurtured but I’ve seen a fair bit passed over or quickly forgotten," Wilkinson told TMN. "Despite the large number of local labels that Australia is blessed with, there will always be more artists who need support to grow. We are a label with the patience and passion to take chances with our artists and invest in them to grow.

"I’ve always been focused on entry level opportunities for musicians," she added. "We want to be with them as they take their first steps and stick with them as they find their path."

The Lazy Thinking launch party will be hosted on February 11 at the Red Rattler with Rita Revell, Greenwave Beth, JaysWays and Artefact set to perform.

Following the launch event Lazy Thinking will present a live music night on the first Thursday of each month at the Red Rattler, with an emphasis on profiling and supporting unsigned artists.
