After 13 years leading triple j Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe has a new gig.

The broadcast veteran has transitioned into the role of deputy content director at triple j, working closely with program teams, presenters and the content director, he writes in a social post.

“I’ve used this line before but working at Unearthed is like winning the Aus music lotto. Being part of a dream team of local music fans, discovering new favourite songs and artists every day - it’s unreal,” he writes on Instagram.

“Excitingly,” he continues, “someone else will get to do that next as I’ve moved onto a new role at triple j as deputy content director, which I’m already loving and is giving me a chance to keep pushing Australian artists to the next level.”

His successor at the music discovery platform has yet to be announced.

A triple j stalwart, Howe has overseen the programming of triple j Unearthed since its launch in 2011 as a digital radio station, playing all-Australian and all-independent music, all sourced through triplejunearthed.com.

Prior to joining the ABC’s youth-focused network, Howe was deputy editor at specialist dance music site, inthemix.com.au.

With his exit announcement, the Unearthed Instagram account gave a fitting salute. “Wouldn’t be the same without you,” the message reads. “Your dedication and commitment to championing emerging Australian artists in this role for over a decade has been nothing short of exceptional and we are so grateful that you have been a part of the team! Truly an Unearthed GOAT!!!”

In what was described as an “historic moment” for Australian music, triple j pressed the button on Triple J Unearthed, it’s second digital station, back in October 2011. Later, the state-funded broadcaster took over management of the Dig Music digital station, rebranded it and launched a third digital station in April 2014 with Double J.
