Shazam, the music recognition app that Apple purchased in 2018 for US$400 million, has revealed its most Shazamed hit as Tones & I’s ‘Dance Monkey’.

The top spot was confirmed in a new playlist documenting the Top 100 Shazams of all time. The Australian singer songwriter’s quirky ode to busking has had more than 36.6 million Shazams since its global release in May 2019.

"Shazam has been a huge platform for me in terms of reaching people," the singer, real name Toni Watson, said in a statement to the BBC.

“I didn't have a following when I released 'Dance Monkey’, but it gave me the opportunity to reach more people and elevate my fanbase, which has all let to creating a career for myself.

“Shazam is definitely an app designed to help more unknown artists, and everyone knows Tones loves an up-and-comer!"

The second most Shazamed song was Lilly Wood, The Prick and Robin Schulz's ‘Prayer In C’ while third in line was Passenger's ‘Let Her Go’.

Aussie acts Sia (#7), Gotye (#8) and Cookin' on 3 Burners (#9) also made the list.

The UK-born Shazam is available as a standalone app in the App Store, Google Play Store, Siri and Control Center. Additionally, it has been announced Shazam has crossed 200 million monthly active users (MAUs).

Apple Music used the app's technology for its real-time lyrics feature, and last year launched Shazam-branded playlists for users to find new music that is trending on the platform.

Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music, Beats, and International Content said: “Apple Music and Shazam offer a seamless experience to music fans around the world, from Shazam’s ubiquitous discovery platform to Apple Music’s unparalleled content, global live radio stations and human curation.

“Looking back at our long history together, we can only see how close our missions have been: bringing the best home for music lovers and creators everywhere.”
