The BBC has secured rights to Hamburg Days, a six-part Beatles biopic series that chronicles the legendary band's formative years in Germany's notorious red-light district during the early 1960s.
As per Variety, the drama, acquired from Turbine Studios for BBC One and iPlayer, promises to unveil the gritty origins behind one of music's most celebrated success stories.
The Beatles biopic series draws from the autobiography of Klaus Voormann, the German artist and session musician who witnessed their transformation firsthand. Voormann, who also serves as a consultant on the production, provides intimate insights into the band's Hamburg chapter — a period that shaped their sound and stage presence before global stardom beckoned.
"In the smoke-filled clubs of Hamburg's St. Pauli's red-light district, an inexperienced young rock 'n' roll band from Liverpool collide with two young artists, Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr," reads the official synopsis. "Together, they help spark a transformation that turns a scrappy group of teenagers into the greatest music phenomenon the world has ever known: The Beatles."
The series development team brings impressive credentials to this Beatles drama. Benjamin Benedict, producer of Generation War, spearheads the project alongside head writer Jamie Carragher, who previously worked on Succession. Christian Schwochow, known for his work on The Crown, takes the helm as showrunner, while Mat Whitecross, director of acclaimed music documentaries including Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams and Oasis: Supersonic, will direct the series.
BAFTA-winning musician and composer David Holmes will curate the soundtrack, ensuring the musical elements match the series' ambitious scope. The production represents a collaboration between W&B Television, Turbine Studios, ZDF, and AGC Television, with support from MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.
Sue Deeks, head of scripted pre-buy acquisitions at the BBC, emphasised the compelling narrative potential: "Hamburg Days is the fascinating story of how, in the space of two short years, a raw young band from Liverpool honed their music skills in Hamburg, before returning home to become an overnight worldwide success. It is an incredible story, accompanied (of course) by an amazing soundtrack!"

The timing proves particularly significant as Sony Pictures simultaneously develops Sam Mendes' ambitious four-film Beatles cinematic event, scheduled for 2028. That project features Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, with each film focusing on a different band member's perspective.
