Robert Rigby’s label Ambition Entertainment has departed Universal Music (UMA), signing a new distribution deal with Sony Music Australia (SME).
The independent music company has carved out a niche in providing a home for adult contemporary artists in Australia, including many established local career artists.
Rigby told TMN that from the humble beginnings of Ambition, the vision for his company was to become "a major player in the adult contemporary music market".
He added: "Joining forces with Denis [Handlin] and the Sony Music team in our new distribution partnership heralds a new era in our business.”
Ambition, launched by Rigby in 2009, was responsible for the recent Platinum success of Australian music legend, Russell Morris, whose 2012 blues and roots album Sharkmouth saw Morris take home his first ARIA Award in 2013.
Other label successes include Platinum and Gold-selling releases with Michael Crawford, Tina Arena, and the late Jon English.
Denis Handlin AM, Chairman & CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Australia and New Zealand and President, Asia said: “ We are delighted to welcome Robert and Ambition Entertainment to the Sony Music family.
"Robert and his team have developed a very strong strategic vision for their artists and built an excellent catalogue. We look forward to creating many successful projects together in the future.”
Ambition’s primary imprint, Fanfare Records, has developed into one of the most successful Australian adult music record labels in rock, blues, country and contemporary genres.
The label’s roster includes Marina Prior, James Morrison, Todd McKenney, The Celtic Tenors, Vika Bull Richard Clayderman, Frank Ifield, Julie Anthony, Don Burrows, Leo Sayer and Kevin Johnson.
Rigby is a former executive for Warner Music Australia, and before inking the new deal with SME, was an A&R consultant and executive manager of The Voice for UMA.
