Over 30 songs enter the TMN Hot 100 following triple j's Requestival

Triple j listeners played music programmer last week, sending the airplay charts into a tailspin.

The national broadcaster just wrapped up its first-ever Requestival, an initiative that saw the station invite listeners to program the music via requests.

And its influence is clear for all to see on the TMN Hot 100 powered by Radio Monitor.

The youth broadcaster says it chose a week's worth of music from more than 73,000 song requests, and while triple j still featured plenty of new and rising Australian artists, there were tonnes of older tracks and pop bangers that never would have made the playlist otherwise.

With the station reaching more than 2.2 million listeners across five capital cities, a week's worth of solid airplay on triple j is often enough to crack the Hot 100.

So in an age where commercial radio favours the AC and Hot AC formats, triple j jumping on some old classics was bound to shake things up.

There were 24 re-entries and nine new tracks on the Hot 100 this week, including a stack of songs that featured during Requestival.

Among them were some high re-entries for 'Crazy In Love' by Beyonce ft. Jay-Z (#57), David Guetta's 'Titanium' ft. Sia (#66), 'Hey Ya!' by Outkast (#67) and Natalie Imbruglia's 'Torn' (#80).

The list goes on. 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' by Whitney Houston landed at #79 while 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight) by Modjo impacted at #87 and 'Just A Girl' by No Doubt popped up at #94 .

Normal service has resumed this week, but it was undoubtedly a fantastic way to keep fans engaged at a time when live music has come to a halt amid the coronavirus pandemic.
