The University of Melbourne is now offering Eurovision as a subject

The 2018 Eurovision Song Contest may be over, with Aussie entrant Jessica Mauboy placing 20th out of 26th in the final, but despite the disappointment it seems that Australia's appetite for Eurovision is only growing.

From Semester 2 this year the University of Melbourne will offer a subject called Eurovisions (EURO10002).

"If you know your Lordis from your Conchitas, understand the controversy surrounding voting blocs, and like to remind your friends about where it all began for ABBA then it's time to make it official!" announced UMelb on its Facebook page.

According to the course descriptors, the subject is being offered for Undergraduate Level 1 at Parkville campus.

Learning outcomes include an in-depth understanding of the history of Europe through the prism of the Eurovision Song Contest, and the ability to communicate effectively about issues relating to the Eurovision Song Contest,

"The ESC offers a rich site for exploring many issues at the core of Europe today: the expansion of the European Union, the integration of Europe as well as the ‘nation branding’ of new participating states.

"Through a series of case studies, this subject will examine a range of dimensions of Europe, including language, culture, diversity, the national and the transnational, as well as issues of gender and sexuality."
