Taylor Swift has officially shattered Adele's nearly decade-old first-week sales record with her latest album The Life of a Showgirl.
The US pop superstar's latest record, which was released last week on Friday, October 3rd, has already accumulated an impressive 3.5 million equivalent album units according to Billboard, surpassing Adele's 25, which held the crown since December 2015 with 3.482 million equivalent album units.
The achievement marks a significant milestone in Swift's career trajectory, with The Life of a Showgirl outperforming her previous releases by substantial margins. Her previous album The Tortured Poets Department debuted with 2.61 million equivalent album units, while 1989 (Taylor's Version) opened with 1.653 million, Midnights with 1.578 million, and Reputation with 1.238 million equivalent album units.
Traditional album sales for The Life of a Showgirl reached 3.2 million copies through physical and digital purchases, approaching but not yet surpassing Adele's traditional sales record of 3.387 million copies. Swift's impressive physical sales figures stem largely from her strategic release of multiple album variants, creating substantial demand amongst collectors and dedicated fans.
The album's physical offerings included CD variants titled "Sweat and Vanilla Perfume", "It's Frightening", "It's Rapturous", and "It's Beautiful", alongside vinyl versions labelled "The Shiny Bug", "Baby, That's Show Business", "Tiny Bubbles in Champagne", and "The Crowd Is Your King". Swift also released four additional CD formats featuring acoustic renditions and songwriting voice memos, with several variants available for only 24 hours.
Streaming performance proved equally impressive, with The Life of a Showgirl breaking Spotify's record for most streamed album in a single day within just 12 hours of release. The streaming platform had previously announced that the album received 5.5 million pre-saves, establishing another record before its official arrival.
Final first-week sales figures are expected to be announced on Sunday, October 12th. This additional tracking time could potentially widen the gap between Swift's achievement and Adele's previous record.
