Sydney Symphony Orchestra Scraps Booking Fees for 2026 Season in Transparency Push
Sydney Symphony Orchestra will remove booking fees from direct ticket purchases, with transparent 'price you see is price you pay' ticketing.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will remove booking fees from all ticket purchases starting with its 2026 season, positioning itself among the first major Australian arts organisations to adopt fully transparent, all-inclusive ticket pricing.
From this year, audiences who purchase tickets directly through the orchestra will no longer pay additional booking charges, with the organisation introducing a “price you see is the price you pay” approach to ticketing.
The change follows audience feedback around hidden costs during the ticket purchasing process, and reflects a broader global shift toward clearer pricing models across the live entertainment sector.
Previously, single ticket purchases carried an $8.95 booking fee, while subscriptions were exempt. Under the new system, the orchestra will absorb that cost in order to simplify the buying process and remove additional charges at checkout.
The move is also aimed at improving accessibility for audiences, particularly for those purchasing lower-priced tickets, where booking fees can represent a larger proportion of the total cost.
“We have listened to our audience and agree with them that buying a ticket should never be confusing or carry hidden costs. By removing booking fees, we’re making it clear and straightforward for our audiences, ensuring that the price you see is the price you pay. It’s about fairness, openness and putting our audiences first,” said Craig Whitehead, Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Ticket pricing for the orchestra will otherwise remain unchanged, with many classical performances continuing to start from $36. The organisation also maintains a range of initiatives aimed at broadening access to live orchestral music.

These include programs such as Mob Tix, Under 35 and Student tickets, as well as a broader suite of Learning & Engagement experiences. The orchestra’s 'Listen to This' series and Open Rehearsals offer adult tickets from $49, while 'Ready, Set, Listen!' concerts designed for children aged 0–5 begin at $40.
Pricing for high-demand 'Sydney Symphony Presents events' — including film concerts and performances featuring internationally acclaimed guest artists — will continue to vary based on demand.
Founded in 1932 by the Australian Broadcasting Commission, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performs more than 180 concerts annually to audiences exceeding 350,000 people. Resident at the Sydney Opera House and led by chief conductor Simone Young, the orchestra also tours nationally and internationally.
