Spotify tests a basic “lite” version of its app

It plays random tracks from suggested playlists for free and with lesser quality… and that’s basically it.

spotify lite beta

Following on from “lite” version of Google, Facebook and Instagram, Spotify Lite has suddenly appeared as an Android test on Google Play Store.

Other Lite versions try to keep as many of the basic features as they try to minimise storage space and data consumption.

Spotify Lite, however, is best described more as “bare-boned” than “slim downed”.

It plays random tracks from suggested playlists for free and with lesser quality… and that’s basically it.

There is no choice of playlists, no searches for singles tracks, no internet connection or offline playback and no radio.

It is still a test and might include more features.

But having a basic version could achieve for Spotify what other music streaming services are also aiming for – trying to tap into that huge audience that has not got into streaming presumably because they find the devices too expensive and complex.
