Red Bull TV goes all-in on live festival broadcasts

What's seemed like an inevitable development for years now is getting a big push by Red Bull this year, with the announcement that Red Bull TV will be running live broadcasts of some of the world's biggest music festivals this year.

Rather than sticking with a typical live broadcast of the performances alone, the Live Music Festivals digital service will apparently go one better and let viewers "feel like industry insiders" with exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage and interviews, and a unique perspective that captures the festival atmosphere and "feels just like being there" - all it's missing is the VIP bar.

The first festival to be broadcast is massive Spanish event Primavera in June, and the last will be Austin City Limits in October. In between, we'll be treated to coverage of Gorillaz' UK one-dayer Demon Dayz, as well as some other huge events in Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Roskilde Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Montreaux Jazz Festival, and even Lollapalooza.

It's not yet clear whether festival broadcasts like these will attract a large audience of music fans who will settle in to enjoy a vicarious festival experience, in much the same way as they'd listen to the Hottest 100 countdown, but it's a big move towards making live festival streaming a going concern.
