Australian-born executive Cindy James rises up the ranks at Virgin Music Group, with a promotion to general manager of the company’s North American operations.

Announced Wednesday, April 17, James is rewarded for being “instrumental in providing leadership and insights across the ever-evolving landscape of our business,” comments Jacqueline Saturn, president of Virgin Music Group North America and executive VP of global artist relations.

Having worked in offices in Australia, London, New York, and Los Angeles, James has soaked up “incredible global knowledge, commercial expertise, and invaluable relationships that will help take our artist and label partners to the next level,” adds Saturn.

James has been flying the flag in the music industries of the U.S. and U.K. for a decade.

She joined the Universal Music Group-owned indie music distributor and label services specialist as head of commercial marketing for Caroline in 2019, before Caroline transitioned into Virgin Music Label & Artist Services in 2021. Most recently, she served as senior VP and head of commercial marketing for Virgin Music.

“There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the independent music community than right now,” says James, who is based out of Virgin Music Group’s global HQ in Los Angeles.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside Jacqueline to continue building upon our important work as a key partner to the visionary entrepreneurs on our roster.”

Earlier, James held senior roles across streaming, marketing, digital, and partner development at Island Records and Sony Music Entertainment.

Prior to joining Universal Music Group in NYC in late 2017, James accumulated more than 10 years’ experience working in senior positions with Sony Music in three territories, rising to senior director of streaming & playlisting strategy at the music giant’s New York office.

At Sony Music, she’s recognised for having formed the music giant’s streaming strategies.

James is a former executive of the week and regular entry on Billboard’s Indie Power Players lists, and has a reputation for identifying industry trends way ahead of time.

She has been characterised by her colleagues as a “force” in music and pop culture, reads a profile published 2019 in The Music Network, when she served as VP of streaming & playlisting strategy for Island Records.

Those artists include Shawn Mendes, Nick Jonas, Fall Out Boy and Australia’s own Dean Lewis.

James cut her teeth as a promoter, tour manager, freelance music journalist, and record store manager.
