Bigsound Scores $3.8M Investment From Queensland Government

Bigsound is set to become even bigger, with the promise of a cash injection from the Queensland government to tune of $3.8 million over a four-year span.

The investment was made during the 2023 Queensland Music Awards, and should put to rest any concerns from the domestic industry that the incoming SWSX Sydney conference and showcase event could overshadow the established Brisbane powwow.

State premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced her government’s investment, by way of a pre-recorded speech which played during the QMAs, held Tuesday night (March 28) at the Fortitude Music Hall.

"Queensland’s music scene continues to go from strength to strength, after some pretty tough years,” she said.

"Right now in Queensland I believe there’s something special happening with our music scene here, and tonight I want everyone in the room to know that our government backs you and backs your industry. I know how important Bigsound has been for your industry for the last 22 years, that’s why I’m pleased to announced $3.8 million in funding over the next four years to make Bigsound even bigger.”

The cash boost comes as the Queensland capital gears-up for the 2032 Olympic Games, a once-in-a-lifetime carnival of sport and entertainment for which multiple tiers of government have committed billions of dollars for infrastructure upgrades and for the creation of new venues, including a new arena at Roma Street.

“Bigsound is doubling down on its important multi-decade role in the exporting of Australian music,” said QMusic CEO Kris Stewart.

“This investment by the Palaszczuk government will mean more international and national decision makers watching the Australian bands most likely to break. It will also be spent on practical and meaningful outcomes. We know the industry is tough, but by providing the best possible experience for artists choosing to showcase, we set them up for the best opportunity for success."

Bigsound 2023 will take place once again in Fortitude Valley’s live music precinct, from Sept. 5 – 8, with The Fortitude Music Hall, winner of the metropolitan venue of the year winner at the 2023 QMAs, and more than a dozen venues throughout the Valley set to host guests and performers.
